Three years ago, I wrote a post here about death.
Now I can’t decide whether that was a harbinger of what was to come, or a jinx on myself, but I can assure you that after my long disappearance, I am very much alive, and I have a couple new stories to share this summer as I get back in the storytelling swing of things. The first one will be coming out on June 3rd, and it’s the story of a woman who has a distinctive and deadly power over…
Beets.
Yes, this is indeed another Death by Veggies story, and to help us all get in the mood, I’ve collected some facts about this delightfully messy root vegetable that I’ll share over the next few weeks while we wait for the book release.
The first tidbit I found raised my eyebrows, especially since I didn’t know this until after I wrote the story. Supposedly in the folklore of some cultures, eating from the same beetroot can make two people fall in love.
But what happens if two people who aren’t meant to be together eat from the same beetroot? Hmm…
And apparently the Romans used beetroot as a sort of aphrodisiac, and even painted beetroots in their brothels. Could be the boron that beets contain, but it does kind of make one wonder if the Romans were just that turned on by the sight of blood. Wouldn’t surprise me.
More on these and a few others here: JustBeetIt
Next week, a little more history, maybe a recipe or two, and a sample of the new story.
In the meantime, are you a beet-lover, or a beet-hater?
Mmm…beets….
