Parchment & Pixels: September 2022

Having finally finished my award judge duties, I’m back to choosing my own books, and I immediately stayed up late one night last week to start Kingdom of Bones by James Rollins. I’ve had my copy (an ARC I got free from the local bookshop) for months now, and my husband read it right after I brought it home. He says it’s not as good as a lot of Rollins (we read everything Rollins writes), but still very much worth the times spent. So while I’m not very far into it just yet, it definitely has my attention. Who doesn’t love a good adventure that starts with a treasure hunt in the jungle…with cannibals?!

I am also trying to make some inroads into my *insane* comic book TBR pile that just keeps growing because I have my regular pull list at the local comic shop. But even though I have *so many* issues to catch up on, I still picked up the first issue of the new Predator comic (variant cover, after some deliberation at the counter). Seriously. When do you read comics? It takes me a good twenty minutes to get through an issue, because I need time to take in the artwork and the words together – it’s a lot of stimulus for my brain. But I know I have time for at least an issue or two a day. I just need to…make more of a point.

As for TV – we’re currently watching both She-Hulk (Disney+) and Harley Quinn (HBO – animated), and both are quite a bit better than I expected. Harley is…well, definitely an adult show, even though it’s animated (fun, for sure!). And She-Hulk is…surprisingly endearing, which is odd to say about a Hulk, but I think it fits, at least for now.

In movies, if you haven’t watched it yet, I’d definitely recommend Prey on Hulu, which is a prequel to the Predator movies. I’m also looking forward to catching Morbius (one of my favorite comic book antiheroes, and yes, I have every issue), which just became available on ??. I know it’s gotten some poor reviews, but I’m gonna watch it anyways.

Your turn! What have you been reading, watching, or listening to lately? Drop me a comment either here on the blog, in an email reply, or on your social media platform of choice!
